Searching for a document, searching for an author to view a list of their documents or to assign them to a record during cataloging, etc., are daily tasks for PMB users.<\/p>

There are different ways to access searches in the Catalog tab, in the form of different choices in the sidebar menu:<\/p>

\u00a0searches cover all PMB records: monographs, periodical records (journals), bulletin records (journal issues), and article records;
“Periodicals” searches cover only periodical records (journals);
“Latest records” allow you to consult the most recently added records to the database;
“Predefined searches” allow you to access previously saved multi-criteria “All records” searches (for example, to quickly relaunch a frequently performed search);
“Predefined copies” searches allow you to access previously saved multi-criteria copy searches.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

A\u00a0Boolean expression<\/strong>\u00a0describes an operation that conforms to the rules of Boolean algebra, in which the operands and the result each take one of two distinct values \u200b\u200b(either true or false). The operators of Boolean algebra are those of logic: AND, OR, NOT, etc.<\/p>

In PMB, the AND operator defaults to plus (+), the OR operator defaults to space, and the EXCEPT operator defaults to dash (-).<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

      In PMB, the default operator is OR. If you search for two words separated by a space, the response will first contain results that contain both terms, then either OR the other.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

      The hyphen<\/strong>\u00a0should not be confused\u00a0with the\u00a0EXCEPT operator<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0: the same symbol, “-“, is used for both. The EXCEPT operator is\u00a0always<\/strong>\u00a0preceded by a space, while the hyphen will be\u00a0attached<\/strong>\u00a0to the word preceding it.<\/p>

      To compensate for the different spellings, when searching for a term including a hyphen, the search will return:<\/p>

      • results including the searched compound word with its hyphen;<\/p><\/li>

      • results including both words (AND);<\/p><\/li>

      • (results including at least one of the two words (OR), if the default operator is OR).<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

          runcation is a symbol that replaces one or more letters in a word. It allows you to search for terms that have the same root by substituting one or more characters with a symbol. In PMB, this symbol is the asterisk (*).<\/p>

          Truncation can be used at the beginning and\/or in the middle and\/or at the end of a word.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

          • philo*<\/i>\u00a0can refer to\u00a0philo<\/i>\u00a0but also\u00a0to philosopher<\/i>\u00a0,\u00a0philosophy<\/i>\u00a0,\u00a0philology<\/i>\u00a0…<\/p><\/li>

          • *pins<\/i>\u00a0may refer to\u00a0pines<\/i>\u00a0,\u00a0firs<\/i>\u00a0,\u00a0grapins<\/i>\u00a0, etc.<\/p><\/li>

          • *osta*i*h<\/i>\u00a0will be able to fire\u00a0Shostakovich<\/i>\u00a0.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

            Quotation marks<\/h5>

            In a search, entering a sequence of characters in quotation marks searches for the sequence of characters as entered (but without taking into account accents or capital letters).<\/p>

            Searching for\u00a0“The Red and the Black”<\/i>\u00a0(with quotation marks) may return:<\/p>

            • Red and black<\/i>\u00a0\u00a0;<\/li>
            • A Social Portrait: A Study of The Red and the Black.<\/i><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>
              Start with<\/h5>

              In PMB, the operator\u00a0begins with<\/strong>\u00a0corresponds to the underscore (underscore, under the number 8 on the French keyboard): “_”.<\/p>

              Used in a search, this means that the title begins with the searched word. Stop words (the, the, the…) are ignored.<\/p>

              • Educators and young children<\/i><\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><\/div>

                If the operator\u00a0begins with<\/strong>\u00a0is used with quotation marks, the searched characters will be at the beginning of the title, and empty words are then taken into account.<\/p>

                    Parentheses<\/h5>

                    Parentheses allow you to group different words in your searches and change the order in which operators will be considered.<\/p>

                    cat + (dog rabbit)<\/i>\u00a0will return results containing either\u00a0cat<\/i>\u00a0AND\u00a0rabbit<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0cat<\/i>\u00a0AND\u00a0dog<\/i>\u00a0. This search is equivalent to\u00a0cat + dog cat + rabbit.<\/i><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><\/div><\/section>

                    Empty words<\/h4>
                    Empty word<\/dfn><\/span><\/span><\/h5>

                    A stop word is a word that does not carry any information. It will not be considered in a search.<\/p>

                    By default in PMB, some words are already declared empty depending on the language. For French these are: le, la, les, l’, du, de, des, d’, a, un, une, et, t, au, aux, en.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

                    Stop words are systematically ignored in searches except when placed in quotation marks.<\/p>

                    When searching for an authority (authors, publishers, etc.), stop words are not ignored. This allows you to search for the singer\u00a0Dominique A<\/i>\u00a0among the authors by searching for\u00a0Dominique + A<\/i>\u00a0. Similarly, in the all-fields search, stop words are not ignored for authorities, even if they are ignored for the title or the table of contents.<\/p>

                    A + time<\/i>\u00a0will return for a title search:<\/p>

                    • In search of lost time,<\/i><\/li>
                    • Times and setbacks.<\/i><\/li><\/ul>

                      The empty word A is then ignored.<\/p>

                      Dominique + A<\/i>\u00a0will return for a search on the author:<\/p>

                      • Dominique A,<\/i><\/li>
                      • but not\u00a0Dominique Pinon.<\/i><\/li><\/ul>

                        Relevance refers to the match between the search and the returned answers.<\/p>

                        In search, relevance is the value assigned to a record. This value is calculated when the search is launched based on the weighting of the searched words.<\/p>

                        By default, in PMB, the first results returned are the most relevant, so that the user only has to browse through a small number of pages of results to find the best matches to their search.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

                        If we search for several words in the title, for example\u00a0medicine flu H1N1<\/i>\u00a0, we will get:<\/p>

                        • first the results containing the 3 words simultaneously,<\/li>
                        • then the results containing two of the three words,<\/li>
                        • finally the results containing only one of the three words.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

                              A result that begins with the search term is also overweighted. This overweighting is effective in all searches: in the title, in all fields, among authorities, etc.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

                                    Sorting search results involves reordering the results obtained.<\/p>

                                    By default in PMB, results are sorted first by relevance and then alphabetically by title (ignoring stop words).<\/p>
